Yume Nikki is an exploration based experience, created in RPGMaker 2003. This long preamble is basically me saying “I am so biased about this game it’s not even funny, so I may as well own up to it” the score is high but I want to convince you I’m not entirely crazy It did however turn me on to the RPGMaker scene, for that I am always grateful. It sounded like the beginning of a creepypasta.

I found the stories and storytelling fascinating and it was in this period that Yume Nikki was released.Īround 2009/2010 I heard about this game, nobody really knew who made it beyond the username “Kikiyama”, it seemingly had no real plot or dialogue and was full of strange and surreal imagery. Slenderman, The Rake and The SCP Foundation all started in this period. The beginnings and -arguably- heyday of creepypastas. For me that period was my early-mid teens, 2008-2011 ish. For some it was the early 2000’s era, Linkin park lyrics in that little flavourtext area on your MSN or AIM chat window may bring back some memories, for others it was when Homestuck was in one of its “actually good” phases. An age where we were (even if peripherally) involved in “something”, some kind of fandom or niche in internet culture. I suppose for many of us who grew up in the internet era, we find one period particularly nostalgic or familiar. This leads her to the Nexus and every subsequent location within the dream world."It's captured a segment of the internet's imagination for 10 years, maybe I can help ramble about why?" Most importantly, Madotsuki can leave the dream bedroom via the door. The chance of this is determined when Madotsuki falls asleep, as one bed in the dream world is randomly selected to teleport her.

Like all other beds, there is a 1/5 chance that it will transport her to the Staircase of Hands. Sitting on the chair and equipping an effect can result in a glitch that increases Madotsuki's speed.Įntering the dream bed does not cause her to fall asleep. She can ride the chair almost anywhere within the dream world (albeit very slowly), but will not be able to get off it until she returns it to her desk. Instead of writing in her diary, sitting at the desk and pressing the "Z" button (interact) will let Madotsuki scoot the chair around her bedroom.

Instead, either a large eye peering into the room or the KALIMBA TV Channel event will be shown, the latter being a 1/8 chance. When switched on, the TV no longer displays the test card.

The bedroom (夢の部屋, Dream Room) is identical to the real one except for a couple of subtle differences - the Famicom is gone and the balcony backgrounds become slightly more surreal. When Madotsuki falls asleep, she finds herself on the dream representation of her balcony (夢ベランダ, Dream Veranda). When it hits zero, the screen blurs out and Madotsuki starts to dream. When Madotsuki climbs into bed, there is a three second countdown in the top left corner of the screen. The bed is the most important object in the room. She also has a television that receives no channels but can be used to play NASU by interacting with the Famicom console. Her desk is where she writes in the titular dream diary to save the game.
